2nd Place "Unexpected" For Ben

The year end FIDE tournament held at Serangoon CC saw Ben achieving 5.5 points out of a possible 7 to finish as tournament 1st Runner-up, in the process he defeated the eventual 2nd Runner-up and Champion Ren Qi - both of which in a tightly contested endgame where Ben eventually won after grabbing a microscopic advantage and drove home the full point by exhibiting superior endgame technique.

Before the tournament Ben has to admit he would never be expecting what he would be achieving by the end of it. Singapore favorite chess player and coach got off to a stunning start by winning his first 5 games, the first time he has done that, he then proceeded to grab a further half point in the finale game to finish 2nd.

Ben admitted after the tournament he was expecting something "more realistic", "perhaps a top 10 finish" said the iconic Singapore-based chess player and coach, "After being out for 2 years it really doesn't do your confidence much help, I was really expecting just to finish top 10, so to end up as 1st Runner-up is a real honor to me".

When questioned about why he meekly offered a draw in the last round with Burmese star chess player Zaw Thet instead of trying to fight for the first place, the Singapore acclaimed chess player merely avoided the question, instead saying "I did not see the incident".

Ben won North Zone Championship 2012

Seen as an underdog in the competition Ben turned up the gear and walked home with the first prize. The tournament this time round was held in Northland Primary School with hundreds of participant turning up to give it their best shot.

Said a relieved Benjamin Tan after the tournament, "Mr Michael Siong, Mr Lau Tak Chiew (who turned 70 this year !) and Indian National Master Parveen Kumar is the hot-favorite for this tournament and I'm honored to be rubbing shoulders with them. It's a sensational feeling to win first for this tournament which I started off as a clear underdog. Sadly this is also my last tournament and I won't be coming back again."

Benjamin Tan drew with NM Parveen Kumar in round 3 when the former was a pawn up, went on to beat Michael Siong and Mr Lau Tak Chiew in round 5 and 6 respectively to finish the competition first.

This is also the first time in 5 years Mr Michael Siong failed to finish first in this tournament series, it's also the first time anyone has beaten him in this tournament.

Ben won 5 games and drew 2, one of the draw is conceded to the Indian NM during round 3, the other draw is conceded during the last round when he offered an early draw to wrap up his title.

Peter Lloyd vs Benjamin Tan

Benjamin Tan vs Mikhail Katov

Ranked as the 3rd prettiest win by GM Benjamin Tan in his short but wonderful career so far. Katov crumbles in 14 moves after a horrible blunder. Takes nothing away from Ben who played this game ever so well. Two thumbs-up !

Benjamin Tan vs Matthew Howard

Benjamin Tan vs George Tandros
